Job/Internship Memo: Sports Camp of America
Description:
A sports internship designed to bring student athletes from America to Japan in order to educate, bond and break cultural barriers between people of different backgrounds, race and beliefs. This description may sound extremely broad at first, but only because this internship ultimately has no boundaries. Essentially, the company pays all expenses and flies one out to Japan to run around with a ball and smile at Japanese children. They provide all transportation, shelter, food and living expenses. If you ask me, that sounds like a nice trade off and a free vacation! So this is what the internship entails:
Assignments:
As a student counselor, you will be assigned the following:
- A group of 8-10 Japanese children categorized by age and English fluency
- A strict schedule containing meal times, daily activities, group discussion templates, and bed time check-ins
- A 4-page packet with forms to be completed by the end of each week that report progress made, future goals, improvements that can be incorporated the following week and a reflection
- A list of essential Japanese word translations to study and have on hand for minimal communication between counselor and camper in case of emergency
Though these responsibilities may sound tedious, they are the key to a successful and smoothly run camp. After the first week, the paperwork and translations become second nature and fly by. Plus, the process of learning a new language and connecting with children on more than just a verbal level will be life changing!
Example of Duties:
1. Assemble your group and create a team name, chant, and skit to be performed on the last day of camp.
2. Teach your group the five basic campfire songs from your information packet along with the corresponding dances.
3. Create a funny and engaging introduction song and dance to be performed on the first day of camp to welcome the campers and make them feel comfortable around you and get excited about camp.
4. Attend every group session with all of the other campers and counselors.
5. Take roll call before every session and do NOT be late.
6. Pick up your daily assignments every morning and actively participate, coach and mentor the campers. These assignments require you to lead:
A sport activity such as soccer, basketball, frisbee, capture the flag, or volleyball
An arts and crafts station such as bracelet making, drawing, painting, or sculpting
Board games such as Monopoly, Battlefield, Connect Four, Risk, or Life
Swimming and water polo in the recreation center
Group discussions in subjects like: healthy living, stress management, communication skills, relationship bonding, etc.
Application, Interview and Selection Process:
1. Any current student athlete may apply for the internship @ SportsCampofAmerica.com.
2. Submit a resume, provide background information, latest health records and answer the proceeding questions.
3. Among all of the applicants, 100 students will be granted an online interview
4. A skype interview will be scheduled
5. Depending on initial impression, further contact will occur, followed by a second skype interview.
6. In the final decision process, a third in person interview will be conducted.
7. Notification of acceptance will follow within two weeks requiring confirmation of attendance and additional steps for preparation.
Mock Interview Questions:

What do you know about this company and our mission?
How can you impact these adolescents’ lives?
What can you provide to the team? (attributes, skills, qualities)

It will provide you with the skill set needed in order to be successful in developing relationships with new people of all ages and overcoming difficult obstacles. Recommended for students with patience, ambition, resilience, and a passion for children and helping others.
I think if we lived in a time where our summer internships weren't based so much on getting work experience, I feel like this would be a great internship for me! I have always wanted to go to Japan and I love sports too so the two would mesh perfectly. I would definitely need to learn some Japanese but would be open to learning their language as well as their culture.
ReplyDeleteKylie, this was a well done job description.

ReplyDeleteSports Camp of America has a great cause. Student counselor seems like a lot of responsibility but you make it sound fun and interesting. I would love to work for children from other countries.
ReplyDeleteDude, this sounds awesome. I kind of really want to do this. Is this an internship that you actually did? Because if you did, that's super cool.
